The Good and Bad of Private Home Staffing

What is private home staffing ? When a business hires a professional, like an electrician or landscaper or even a nanny, they hire that person full-time. They might need that service part-time, but for the most part, the business would rather pay out for the long-term investment in someone who will be dedicated to that business full-time. The difference between working for a company and a private business is that when you work for a company, your job duties are defined by their business plan, which is a document they hand over to you at the start of the job. It states what specific tasks you must perform, when you should do them and how often. This sounds pretty cut-and-dry, doesn't it?

The difference between this and private home staffing is that when you work for a private home care agency, you work a certain amount of time on a particular task or contract. You might work for three months on a contract for the winter months and then for another three months in the spring, but that's really all you're doing. You might also have the option to extend your contract, but that's at the discretion of the client and the home care agency. You might be contracted to work full-time, but the hours you work are determined by your contract. If you want more hours, you can ask for them.

As you can see, the definition of "full-time" is somewhat vague and depends on what kind of agreement you have in place with the agency. You won't need to worry about being paid an hourly wage, because you technically only work a set number of hours per contract. The contracts can be really flexible, though, so if the business needs more help getting done during the peak season, they can give that option to you. A lot of people start out on a contract and then find out they can work more hours once their business grows and they have more clients requiring their services.

Another thing to keep in mind when you're looking for work through a home care agency is that some jobs are better suited for you than others. The best positions tend to be those that involve helping people to bathe, eat, and do other small tasks around the house. It might seem like you're doing very little work, but if you have to go to someone's house every day to provide those services, then you're going to get very busy and will end up with very busy schedules. So if you enjoy running errands and helping people around the house, you might be happier working as a private home care employee than as a full-time nanny.

Some jobs are better suited to part-time work, while others require full-time employment. Those who have families of their own might prefer to work full-time in a daycare facility instead of in a home care service, because the home care service may not always be available. That said, many nannies have families as well and do very well in this type of position. The part-time personal assistant  tends to suit those with flexible schedules, while those who need to set their own hours will probably do better working part-time in a daycare center. It really depends on your personal situation and what you think is best for you.

As you can see, there are lots of things to consider when you're thinking about getting a job as a home care employee or a nanny working for a home care service. There are advantages and disadvantages to both positions, so make sure that you understand them all before making any decision.
